Unamed Tower Defense Game

My next project is a co-op tower defense rogue-lite created in Unreal Engine 5. There are a lot of tower defense and rogue-likes games on the market, but theres a distanct lack of games that combine the two genres; especial co-op ones. The main inspiration for this game comes from other tower defense games such as BTD, Emberward, Element TD 2, but also from Risk of Rain 2. This game is still early in development, but I play to release it in early access within the next couple of years. This will allow me to playtest the game with a wider audience.

PAL-D

  • The Precision Automated Lead Dispatcher (PAL-D), or more commonly referred to simply as PAL, is the first choice for light vehicle defense. Its minimalistic design and light frame work allow for rapid and reliable deployment in otherwise hostile territory.

  • PAL-D is a ballistic turret that I designed with the mindset that this will be the player’s starting turret. It is a well rounded turret with good range and damage capability that does not require a lot of thought to be effective with.

The Towers in Tower Defense

Finding new towers and trying them out is a crucial part of any tower defense game, especially one thats also rogue-lite. So when designing turrets, I tried to create a fun and varied selection of them that filled unique roles. Here is a small sample of those turrets, which are aquired via Blueprints in the game.

Hellfire

  • The Hellfire’s unique ability to target multiple hostiles make it excel at dispatching swarms of low health targets.

  • Hellfire is a payload turret that I wanted to make feel unique from other turrets in the category that already filled the high projectile count niche. To achieve this I gave the Hellfire projectiles a unique property; they find a random target within the turrets range instead of just using the tracked target. This means the Hellfire's damage is spread between hostiles in its range, so the player has to carefully consider its placement and it's effectiveness against the upcoming waves.

RAIL

  • While engineers were researching for methods of preventing targets from warping into friendly territory, they discovered a much simpler solution, utilize the warp signatures to neutralize the threat before they've even had a chance to power their weapon systems.

  • The Rapid Accelerated Instantaneous Launcher (RAIL) Turret was designed to fill the sniper role in a traditional tower defense, but with a twist. Every time this turret is upgrade, an additional barrel is added, which fires and. This lets the player choose if they want to lean in the high damage arch type, or utilize the additional projectiles to apply status effects at extremely high ranges.
